house mate app branding

designing an interface to solve a user’s problem

House Mate was a conceptual app that responds to a user’s problem in managing responsibilities in a share-house.

THE brief

After interviewing, I was able to identify the need to ensure equal accountability within the household. The user requested a neutral but approachable persona to ease current miscommunications with the three people she lived with.

THE Idea

In consideration with the young-adult demographic, the brand personality focuses on a friendly but firm approach involving a mascot for the logomark that interacts with the user throughout the experience. As I was designing for a sharehouse, I leant into the ‘housemate’ slang that is common within Australia and chosen koala imagery to convey something familiar and friendly. Colours and simple typography direct a mindful and motivating interface.

The Outcome

The mobile app concept allows for users to create their own profile, join a household and input tasks to be completed. The app would then randomly allocate tasks, creating a rotation and reminder system to neutralise any discomfort in organising household maintenance among adults. The branding was explored through advertising media and prototyping through Figma to explore the interface design.
